Hey guys

Since installing 8.1 my computer no longer goes to sleep after the required 20 minutes of inactivity. I can manually put it to sleep but it will awaken itself after about 30 seconds and will stay on until it's shut down.

Anyone else have any similar problems or have any suggestions to find out what the heck is keeping my computer from slumbering? Nothing looks unusual in task manager and no 3rd party software is running apart from Mezzmo Media Server which always allowed if to sleep before 8.1. Exiting it makes no difference.

Got the same problem too, on both of my media centres. Still trying to figure it out but it only started happening last week. It wasn't happening when I first upgraded to 8.1.

Yeah seems to affecting quite a few users. Only real advice ive seen is to disconnect from the Homegroup as this can sometimes work. No joy for me though.

You can find out what's causing the PC to resume from sleep by doing the following:

Open an administrative command prompt
type powercfg -lastwake

Resuming from sleep isn't the problem. It's going to sleep after a certain amount of time is the issue. My media centres wake up to record but no longer sleep after the recording.

Seems to be network related, will check the Bios to see if Intel smart connect is doing something weird.

Right I have disabled Wake on LAN and that seems to stop it being automatically woken if I manually put it in sleep mode, still no joy in getting it to auto sleep though.

I think you can try powercfg /requests to see what's actively stopping it from going to sleep. Not sure why this switch uses a "/" rather than "-" as on lastwake.

I was hoping that would show you something useful :( . It might be something fleeting, even if it happened once every 30 mins (assuming you're set to sleep after 30 mins) it would be enough to stop sleep working

Well ive done some digging and a few people on another forum had success after running Maintenance in the Action Centre. Running it now so fingers crossed there is an issue with windows that it wasnt fixing itself.

Seem to have fixed it for the meantime. Running maintenance has sorted whatever issue windows was having, so now it sleeps automatically again! :)

Downside is that it still wakes itself unless "wake on LAN" is disabled in the BIOS, so I have to manually wake the computer if I want to stream something to my living room TV. Not a big deal but still not the way it was under Win 8.

Edit - Disabled "Allow Wake Timers" in the advanced power settings and it seems to have sorted the waking itself. Now I can still have Wake On LAN enabled and can control it from the TV without issue. :)

Thanks, will try this when i get home.

Nope sorry, to be honest the fact that it stays asleep is good enough for me at the minute (turned off the Wake on LAN option again) ive set up a shortcut to manually put it to sleep in the meantime. Hopefully its an issue with 8.1 that Microsoft will address with an update in the near future.

Ok thanks, going have to do a fresh install on both of my media centers back to 8.0. Coming in from work with both of my media centers on all day from recordings is eating into my electric bill:(

Seems my boss is having the exact opposite issue to this. His computer loves going to sleep and never wants to wake up. Good fun seeing him rage about it since he put 8.1 on it. Seems he can't find an answer from the opposite side of the spectrum either
