This is probably a dumb question.... if my computer won't power up; no beep, no fan noise, nothing... is my psu broke. I've tried a different lead and it still won't work.
Is there a motherboard fault that could give similar syptoms?
Sorry, I've been a bit rubbish at providing info haven't I. It's a computer that was working fine for months. It's set up in my cellar and connected to my lounge TV with a cable coming thru the floor. I'd made an extended power switch cable with cat 5 and an old power switch to switch it on from my lounge. It all worked fine until our cat saw the cable popping out from under the TV cabinet and ripped the switch off!
I couldn't be bother to repair the cable so i turned on the computer by touching the bare wires together! It then went thru a brief period of turning itself on as soon as the psu was turned on so I changed it back to using the power switch on the front of the case... I hope you're following this! That worked for a few days until i tried to turn it on the other day and it wasn't having it.
I had another look at this problem over the weekend... I pulled all the power etc header cables off and reconnected them, and what do you know, it works... which makes me think I might have connected something wrong!
It does have another quirky problem though, if I turn off the PSU and turn it on again it boots the machine without me pressing the case power switch. Any ideas whats causing that?
Sometimes there's a setting in the BIOS that can control this. Something like AC soft-off, I can't quite remember. That may be your problem, have a look in there.
