Ok I don't know what section this belongs in, but would like some help please!

One of my systems is locking up and not working, I am in desktop and things freeze, icons do not respond, Windows Explorer does not respond, I cannot get anything up and running such as MSconfig or task manager.

I thought it may have been a corrupt Windows 7 64 bit os, so I disconnected all HD's apart from an empty 500gb one, and did a fresh reinstall, but after a couple of Windows updates and general set up it started again.

So I swapped memory in and out, tried running the memory diagnostics tool that Windows has, but as the desktop freezes after reboot I see no info on the memory.

I have no idea if this is software or hardware based, if it is the motherboard, memory, CPU or graphics?

I can boot and network in safe mode without this issue, and could try Linux, or changing the memory, GPU, or CPU by taking apart my second PC, but it seems a lot of work without a general idea of what may be causing this?

Does anyone have any opinions or advice? (I am typing this on the problem machine in safe mode)

I'm not sure what the problem might be, but if you post the specs of your system here then that will probably help some of the others to diagnose the problem :)

Sorry,

Gigabyte EP4-DSP3
Intel Q9550
Corsair PC8500 4gb or 8gb
Sapphire HD4870 1gb Toxic
Samsung F3 500 and 1tb drives (fresh install on 500gb at the moment)
Seasonic 650w psu
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Download memtest .iso file, make the bootable CD or flash drive and boot pc from that, test memory sticks individually and together.

Is the system overclocked, if so remove the overclock and try that.

Cheers guys I will give that a go.

What I am wondering though, if it is memory, then why does the PC work in safe mode?

I will dig out some PC-6400 and give that a go before testing the PC-8500.

Edit,

OK I have tried both 4gb kits pf PC-8500 seperate, still the same problem, but at one point putting the sticks into the yellow slots gave me a failed boot, I then went into bios and was greeted to a "changed voltages caused blah blah" , and double checked settings, it all looked ok, but I put everything on auto to see if anything changed. Still getting frozen desktop but working in safe mode.

I thought that the memory felt a little hotter than usual during the changing though?

So I dug out my old 4gb kit of PC-6400, put it in the yellow slots and I booted up and got as far as the Firefox start page before it froze again (does the same in the red slots). I click on anything and sometimes it will pop up and it all freezes, usually all I can do is move the mouse cursour around, and when I move it over the toolbar I see the spinning wheel. But regardless of what 4gb kit I use out that three I can still use the PC in safe mode with networking.

I fail to see how memory itself can be the problem if it still occurs with new memory or any combination of the PC-8500 memory, yet I still get to run the PC, with or without networking, in safe mode?

When I look at the summary of events in event viewer it shows The Windows Memory Diagnostic tested the computer's memory and detected no errors.

Edit 23.11, currently running from desktop. Used msconfig to do a selective start up, worked my way through services bit by bit looking for conflicts. so far thats been OK.

System drivers next I guess?

Well did nothing since last night, but today desktop froze again.

I doubt it is memory after using three seperate 4gb sets in there with no change in desktop freezing. Still seems fine in safe mode.

Motherboard?
CPU?
Graphics?

Anyone know of any technical forums where I could get advice?
