Notice how I managed to avoid the use of the word 'spec' in the title!

Basically I have a friend who is looking for a new computer, he was initially thinking if buying one ready made but I suggested building one.

He has a budget of £600 and needs everything bar the monitor. So,

cpu - Was thinking Opteron?
ram - 2 gig
gfx
HDD - 200gig is poss or more.
case
power supply
dvd burner
dvd rom etc
keyboard/mouse (wired) etc.........

He wants 2 gig of RAM as a must, but that is the only thing that he has specified. He has also said that he isn't as bothered about the graphics card as he more bothered about a good CPU and as mentioned 2gig of ram, but he'd still like somthing fairly decent.

So see what you can do.

Your looking to sacrifice something if you want a opteron, 2gig and 200gb for a £600 budget, best thing to do is buy the main components second hand and buy like case etc brand new if budget is tight.

What card would you recommend if you took the graphics card out of the bottom setup, and gave a budget of say £150 just for the card to put in there?

Also he's need another DVD-Rom drive in to enable copying on the fly.

I think your mates wants everything for nothing :D, for £150 at a second hand budget he could possibly get a low end 7800gt?, 1800 series card, brand new hes looking at a 6800gs/x800 series card.

Lol, doesn't everyone! I'm speaking to him tonight so I'll see what he wants to do. I'm trying to steer him away from pre-built though!
