Computer overheating? Mouse and keyboard stop working…

Hey guys,

After a particularly exciting session of Bioshock late last night I started noticing my movement in-game was a bit crazy – I was darting all over the place, uncontrollably!

I got to the point where I had no in-game control and I couldn’t even 'Esc' to the menu… I thought it may have been a bug in the game but upon doing a hard restart and booting to the Windows login screen it became apparent that the mouse/keyboard weren’t functioning here either :(

I manually shut down again and pulled the case out for a connectivity inspection; my MS Wireless desktop (PS2) was connected just fine…

After 10mins or so I fired my machine back up again and everything was fine? I put it down to a heat issue, although I’m not 100%. I know my system likes to get a bit toasty when I’m gaming for a couple of hours at time – my 2900XT regularly gets up in to the 70's and my E2160 sticks at around 45c when put under load, but I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about there – the rest of the case (P182) is extremely well ventilated?

Can overheating affect the connectivity of the mouse/keyboard – I don’t think I've ever heard of it before, but I thought I'd make sure here :)

Has anyone else had anything similar to them?

Cheers,

SW.

Not that I'm aware of, I'd rather say the issue was related to your wireless keyboard and/or mouse and the connection between that at the PC. Might have just went a bit dodgy for a few minutes.

I thought the problem had gone away, but I just had another spell...

I was happily playing away when I suddenly went out of control and had to restart - I lost complete control over my character and Esc failed to work again

After switching off and a long cool-down, I booted back into Windows - I again had no mouse/keyboard control!

I've fixed again now by removing the devices cables, switching off the psu etc but I noticed when I loaded up Bioshock that all my setting had been reset to their defaults - I suppose that’s just the game though, and probably unrelated?

No one else ever had anything like this? I'm inclined to now think that it's a mouse/keyboard problem so I'm going to did out my old ps/2 gear tomorrow and give that a whirl :)

It's weird though that it only happens when I'm gaming?

whats the rest of you;'re setup ?

is the system overclocked at all ?

temps u mentioned look fine, have you checked the motherboard chipset coolers to see if their hot ?

I'm using a E2160 and 2 GB of Crucial Ballistix - both sets of components are at stock speeds, I've been running them in before thinking about any overclocking :(

The rest of my temps all stay under 40 during normal use; do you think I have a duff mobo then?

I still haven't got round to getting out my old mouse and keyboard yet - I think trying different hardware might rule out my current setup.

best bet is too either try different hardware or try you're current stuff in another pc.

possibly the mobo connectors might be duff, is possible try usb and ps2 k/board-mouse.

Okay, for two nights in a row now I've had 1 hour+ sessions with no problems to report ;)

All I've done is lower my in-game graphics settings from high to medium. Maybe something couldn't cope - the game ran fine with everything high, so who knows, but I think it's sorted!

have a look around for tweak guides for the games you play, should be able to figure out what settings you can have on high without pushing things too much.

I'm seeing a pattern now :(

I finished downloading Episode 2 tonight, played it for about 30mins with everything on high and the same problem cropped up... Mouse keyboard froze, I had to manually restart and then switch off my psu - and then I got the mouse and keyboard to respond again!

What do you think it could be, my graphics card (2900XT) seems to play my games fine at the highest levels, and then all of a sudden this happens

Do you think it could be my psu? It’s a two year old 500w Enermax Liberty.

Cheers,

SW.
