ok i am just wondering if you know the problem with this,in my computer i just put in the A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard, a Nvidea 7950 GX2 1gb graphicscard, then i gave it a new case, and installed xp, i put in some new akasa thermal compound on the CPU, everything was great and running fine, and then i installed the asus pc probe which tells you all Tempretures, the cpu was 32 and the motherboard was 29 i didnt think much of it, then i installed test drive unlimited and played top specs perfect, but then all of a sudden the computer shut down, so i started it up again, then within 4 or 5 mins it shut down again, so i thought this is odd, so i checked inside the computer and everything was fine, so i started it up again and went into bios and looked at cpu temerature and it was at 52! i POOD!!! :p myself, so i shut it down asap, then after about a hour i started it up again, worked ok, but then i opened pc probe and it was going up and down from 40-50 degrees the motherboard and cpu temerature, but as soon as i put a game on, the CPU went to 60 and the motherboard was at 50, and after about 5 mins it shuts down (obviously the motherboard or cpu protecting itself from heat) i have 2 case fans the heatsink fan on cpu which is running at full 3169 allso the heat pipe fan and a extra case fan, but nothing changes, theres no jerks no nothing to tell that its gonna shut down but its definatly bcus of the heat, ive been told a couple of things like it could be one of the sticks of ram could be broke so i tried this MEMTEST and about 15% done and the Temp jumped to 66! the highest its ever been and shut down, so its as far as i have read it could be them but also ive heard it could be the cpu fan, but its sitting fine and running full speeed, but a question i would like to ask is if its the RAM broke why does cpu overheat ? (i have 2 ddr400 514mb sticks) so all in all its overheating but the thing is i want to know is whats making it overheat, (i was thinking about watercooling it but since ive been reading i dont know if that will help ?) so question is giving you all the infromation ive gave you what is more than likely the problem ? allso is it true that RAM could be the problem of this ?

would be grateful for all help thanks

i thought there wasnt supost to be contact between heatsink and CPU thats what the thermal compounds for isnt it ? to stop the heatsink frying the Processor ?

You need a good solid contact between them.
The heat is produced in the CPU and it needs to be moved away before the CPU frys itself. You do this by speading the heat through the heatsink. So the better the contact the faster the heat can be moved away from the CPU.

hmmm ok,

so in terms should i have put allot on and just spread it around ?

or just enough to evenly do *** base ?

as i was told i was told the more the better, and the thermal compound was there to stop the heatsink frying the processor.. !

bit confused
thanks for all replys so far

no. You want a small ammount, spread evenly (using an old credit is best way to spread it.)

Give me 2 mins i'll try find a good tutorial with pics.

i havnt swoar once.. :( every time i wrote T H E it came up i was swearing :( but i will do it then, but was just lettnig you know dont want getting a bad name its my first post :p

Thats exactly what your looking for. None of the online instructions seem to have pictures tho :/
(you still need to remove swears from original post)

 All the instructions on that site have nice easy to follow instructions + pics

Other thread was locked, but i was going to reply you have clearly put too much compound on.

A small blob in the centre, about half the size of a pea give or take should be enough.

Or if it helps, the 939 cpus i have, have had a small square area on the top (you'll see if you look closely, on the IHS), i normally aim for something about that size (width wise), or slightly larger, and its always worked great for me.....

Laff, your right, but my attention span isnt that long and the pics dont come till bottom of page 3 on the pdf :p

ok so apart form the thermal compound,

what else could be the problem ? i will tell you the specs,

AMD64 4200+ Dual core
Asus A8N32-SLI deluxe Motherboard
7950 GX2 1Gb Graphics
2 X 512MB DDR400 Ram
160Gb samsung HD
550w EZCool Power supply

and its overheating the psu to 58-66 and the MB which im guessing is the motherboard to 50-58,

thanks ;)

ok i just resat the fan and took the lump of thermal compound off :p i spread it even ect, but sadly say nothing happend different,

it was idel at 40 then as soon as i put test drive on it gradually got upto 62 and then shut down. :(

so now apat from the thermal compound what could be the problem ?

the only other thing i have been told is the Ram

thanks

Ram will not cause your CPU to overheat. You only need a tiny amount of paste.

Where are you getting the temp readings from?

the temp reading are from the asus A booster and allso PC Probe,

and it definatly is overheating because 1stly it shuts down and 2ndly once its about 52 the laging of the game is umbelievable!

can i ask what would happend if i didnt put any paste on ?
what if paste gets on the pins ?

apart from them questions its still strange whats making it to overheat.

maybe getting a new heatsink ? or watercooling ?

money is obviously a big issue and could only just afford my upgrades :(
