Computer Reboots During Games

Recently my computer has been suddenly restarting in the middle of a game. No warnings, BSOD or anything and it's totally random, it's just like someones hit the reset button on the case. It's most common with GTA V.

I had this problem with my old Windows 7 install though two days ago I installed a fresh copy of Windows 8 and since then my PC has rebooted in games a few times and 1 BSOD just hours after installing.

Oddly enough, the computer can do stress tests fine. I have ran Prime95, Memtest86+ and Heaven benchmark to stress test the hardware though are fine even after a few hours. The computer is mostly fine with day to day tasks (minus that one BSOD I had).

My specifications:

i7 4790K
Asus Maximus Hero VII Z97
8GB Corsair RAM
MSI 290X GPU
120GB SSD/1TB HDD
650W ZS OCZ PSU

Prime95 CPU temp: 90C (games usually 60-70C)
Heaven GPU temp: 74C (games usually 70C)

I have looked at the event viewer and it says it was shutdown due to a kernel power loss, but it confuses me as my computer is fine under all kinds of stress tests?

Thanks!

All at stock?

If its only doing it at idle/low usage, then could be worth turning off all the cpu power saving features and forcing a constant voltage on the GPU. I'm not saying necessarily run it like that for ever, but just to see if it stops it. SKIM READ FAIL, DOES IT IT GAMES LOL.

edit - is the power cord in properly at the back? I've had that cause issues before. Could also try a new kettle lead as my freind's was faulty. He didnt know untill he bought a new pc and it was doing the same thing untill he replaced the leed.

Yeah all at stock :(

I've had a look around the back of the case and the power lead is in tight - though I gave it a little shove to make sure. I don't think this was the issue sadly :(

I'm fearing the PSU could be faulty and I only have a months warranty left, though it's really strange how it can cope with stress tests.

Ive been having the same problem for around 6-8 weeks now i have changed psu and gpu but it still was happening i am getting another mb tomorrow i have the asus maximus vii ranger i7 4790k and the msi r9 290x

What does the event viewer say prior to the Kernel power loss. Some of the earlier recorded events or warnings may help to pinpoint the issue.

bit of a thread revival

i was having the same issues as this back in april and in the end i changed/rma most of the parts in my pc i also bought a new case and psu and after a month of problems it was all sorted in the new case and i havent had a problem yet

so last week i thought i would rebuild my boys pc using my old antec p190 case fitted it all in and got it back in his room within 5 min he was down saying that i had turned itself off so i checked it all all seemed fine so thought i would have a play and again within 5min of playing a game it shut down so i rebuilt it in his old case and its fine

so i have come to think that all my problems in april was down to my case? and some how its causing these shutdowns when gaming

has anyone heard of this b4 ?? the only thing that it could be would be the front panel wires ?

Case could be shorting, I suppose. Get an electrical screwdriver with a readout or a voltmeter and check the panels for any current.

Failing that, event viewer is your friend.

Ive had the USB hub in the front panel causing all sorts of problems on an old mobo, had to disconnect it to solve it.
