Hi guys,

I have a custom build computer that stopped working probably a year ago now or more. Basically I left it in the back room and have been using my macbook since. Decided to try and repair the thing as I have a brand new case, monitor, etc and all the other parts already seem to be a waste. I thought it was the motherboard that was knackered but I bought a new one;

Gigabyte 970A-DS3 AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard

And it still doesn't work. I've now chucked out the power supply and have the following parts ATM. I think the CPU must be dead, tbh I don’t know how to test it at all, also not sure if the RAM is up to much. So basically I need to get the computer up and running I think I need a new PSU and new processor at the minimum... the parts I have are as follows;

Gigabyte 970A-DS3 AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard (New)
Antec 300 Case
Corsair 2 x 2gb dominator DDR3 ram (could be faulty?)
AMD Phenom II (pretty sure it's dead)
2 x Hard drives
Nvidia Geforce GTX 460

Could someone please recommend what action I should do... otherwise could you recommend replacement CPU and PSU as these are the only things that I can think of that are preventing me from turning the machine on!

Budget is minimum spend really, computer will only be used occasional but I don't want bottom end stuff. Thanks a lot for anyone who can help.

Willing to spend about 150-200 surely shouldn't need to spend much on on that including buying new RAM?

Hi Lee,

Thanks for the suggestions, was just actually looking at that CPU already! If I was to upgrade the RAM how much would you recommend? What is the 'standard' these days? Probably 6-8gb?

If it's just for internet usage then your current 4GB should be fine. I would say 8GB if you were building a gaming rig, and 16GB for a video editing/encoding type pc.

You could even just buy a new power supply first of all and see if it works. As you get free shipping it's not going to cost you any extra by buying things separately.
