hi all

i built a pc well over a year ago and all was fine. but not having worked on a computer since then i have returned to novise level.
cant remeber the full spec roughtly
AMD athlon 64 3200 (754)
gigabyte motherboard
1 gb ram, two 256, one 512
6800gt graphics card
maxtor HD drive
1 optical drive.

yesterday i moved the computer to do the usual dusting and it just restarted. But befor windows could load it restarted again and the screen just stays black, when this happens all the fans are spinning and the dvd drive makes a clicking noise.

after many attempts i managed to load windows in safe mode, how ever after about a minut it restarted again but this time showing an error message that went along the lines of DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

the computer then restarted and the screen went black as above.

i left it at that

today i tried to start it again and it loaded into windows first time. then after a few minuts restarted. it went through all the bios readings but befor the stage of it loading windows another error message came up that that went along the lines of... windows could not start because of a missing file. windows root\system\32\ntoskrnl.exe.

please any help as to what is cause this?
thanks.

Download Memtest86+ V1.70

It will be an ISO, so unzip and burn it onto a cd, if using Nero choose Disc Image to burn it to cd.

Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)

http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

Memtest86+ V1.65 works well it's just V1.70 has support for newer hardware see change log: http://www.memtest.org/#history

Set your pc to boot from cd/dvd drive and memtest will auto run after you restart. Run the test for an hour and memory problems should show up in this time. I did run it once for 48 hours, but only for a laugh. :)

Never move your computer whilst it's switched on  . I guess hard drive has taken a bump and platters are damaged.
