computer running at snails pace!

i cant work out what it is thats doing this
i did a system restore, removed new programs, even took out the cd rom drive i recently installed but nothing works
it happened right after i'd finished backing up one of my dvds to xvid, when i closed down auto gk and auto gk came up with a load of errors as it closed, then the computer shut down (through windows)
What can i try?

as far as i know there is nothin unusual running. i also went into msconfig and checked the startup processes

i left it unplugged all night and now it seems fine
