Hey there, basically my computer wasn't working because i sold my ram and was trying to use some old ram i found in my drawer :) anyway.... i asked my friend if i could puy my harddrive into his computer because i needed to get some work off my harddrive....

(His computer worked before i started this)

so i unplugged the kettle plug from his psu and proceded to unplug his 2 harddrives but i accidentally plugged my ide harddrive into the socket on the motherboard used for cd drives.....

anyway it wouldn't start up and i noticed that i had put it in the wrong socket so i put it in the right one and plugged back in the psu... but it still wouldn't start up... so i was like oopss.... anyway i put back in his harddrives but nothing...his computer now wont start up at all...

you plug in the psu and the fans spin for a second but when you press the power button on the front of the case nothing at all happens and the power button at the front is connected to the motherboard like it should be and the psu light is on and the motherboard LED is on....

his father says his motherboard must be broke or something so he's taking it to a repair centre tomorrow, i just currently feel like ****, i will have to give him the money for the repairs or new hardware since it was my fault.... just wondering if you guys have any idea what it might be, i concluded it to only be the psu or the mobo that have shorted or just packed it in...

thanks in advance.

its doubtfull the motherboard is bust. the socket for the cd drives and the hdd are the same no problems there. im wondering if its just you need to clear the cmos.

hopefully not then i only have to pay the repair price if they can work out whats wrong... wish i just didn't go into his room...

As fishdude says, try resetting the CMOS. Also, has the Mobo got a power switch on it? It's not ungheard of for power buttons to naff up

Did you unplug his system drive?

Surely you would be better just plugging yours in as a secondary drive.

Just a thought.

hey it's my comp that dmack's referring to. i tried resetting the cmos - taken out the battery for approx 30 secs right? but still there's no response

i've done a little googling and from people with similar problems i've come to find that it's probably one of 3 problems:

a broken psu since the green led only requires 5v to light up
a broken mobo
a short somewhere

any other guesses would be appreciated and i'm going to look into testing it with a new psu hopefully some point tonight, the repair shop was closed unfortunately but i have sent them an email

thanks in advance guys

 seems it was the psu, going to try and get my hiper back on warranty... fingers crossed

haven't got a clue how or what has happened though
