Hey guys,
This recently happened about 2 days ago and is getting on me nerves  Well, my windows MCE2005 has been installed for about a month. 2 days ago it decided to play up and now my computer stutters.Every 10-15 mins, my whole computer stutters, like loops, and everything sttuters (music, games, mouse etc.) I had this problem with vista RC1 when I had it installed and now it has recently happened to MCE. It's really hard to play games like this. I already scanned for spyware and viruses, and nothing was found. So, any ideas? :(
Thanks
Dave

Sounds like a driver issue to me or possibly even a heat related problem.

Have you installed anything new recently? (hardware or software?) Also when your PC 'stutters' is it in general use and does it occur at set periods or are they random?

Post some tech details of your system and we'll try to get to the bottom of this problem ;)

Well, the stutters come randomnly (I think) Also, I think it stutters once at startup when I choose my profile. Specs of my comp are in my sig

So anyone got any ideas? This is making me really annoyed  I cannot play any games or listen to music without this bloody stutter every few mins. I want to leave a de frag as a last resort...

my mate had that problem... decided to buy a new pc in the end...

if it were mine... i would have got to the root of the issue.. have you got another computer you can test components on?

Hmm... yes the dual-core patch could have something to do with it but this generally only affects games where the framerate suffers from stuttering. In general use you shouldn't see a difference with or without the patch.

It sounds more like a failing hard disk to me although it could also be the memory to blame. Either way, your system is waiting for something to catch up hence the stuttering. Do you notice the hard disk activity LED being on all the time for instance? If so, this could mean a failing hard disk or even a lack of physical memory (meaning your hard disk is being using for virtual memory)

Have you tried another hard disk in your system? I would also try another pair of memory modules just in case, preferably ones that are of higher capacity.

Unfortunately this is one of those problems that there could be a hundred different causes. It could even be the sound card that's causing it - are you using onboard sound or a separate card? Creative sound cards are well known for causing problems such as these.

As already said, run chkdsk.

Did you change anything about the PC just before this started happening?

Did windows auto update anything?

Did you install anything?

Did you peruse any dubious sites? :)

and

Can you roll back with a restore point?

If the behaviour persists after restoring then consider hardware.

'i want to leave defrag as a last resort'

Thats where you're going wrong, run chkdsk and do a defrag, its no effort and theres a big chance it will solve everything.
Maybe also want to test to see that you're rams all running fine?

Just do the chkdsk and defrag then see where you stand.

OK guys, I think the easiest way to check is first to do a defrag. If that doesn't work, then I can restore to a previous system restore. Failing that, I can check components. I will report back when done, thanks guys :)

OK guys, update. I did the de frag last night and am still getting stuttering :( When I checked my CPU was at 100%, but maybe that was because im unzipping a large file now...

possibly... try checkin when you're not unzipping :p
Sounds like an odd problem, do a scan with mcafee avert stinger (its free, google it)

Well, I use AVG, and it didn't detect anything.. Just checked my CPU and it was at 100% again. When I check it, it goes down to like 20% straight away...
