Hi all,

With my dad's PC (quite old), he said that today randomly it took a long time to boot. Got stuck on the bios screen for ages 'checking nvram', when it finally got past that point it still took ages for Windows to complete loading, couldn't click or see task bar for ages.

I looked at it, it still took ages checking nvram but booted into windows reasonably quick

Anyone know what the issue might be?

Thanks!

Two things you could try is tweeting the CMOS battery, other that that it may be a memory issue. See what removing a stick of ram does, or switching the slots used.

NVRAM is RAM that doesn't empty when the PC is shut down, it's integrated into the motherboard and can't be replaced.

Possible solutions:
1 - Reset BIOS/UEFI to fail-safe defaults or reset settings using the jumper
2 - Replace the CMOS battery
3 - Replace the motherboard

It might be worth just replacing the PC too if it's really old

Thanks all, I'll reset the bios first and change battery

If not I'll probably replace the whole PC rather than just motherboard as it is all very old

Will see what happens tomorrow if it has any issues
