Computer turns on but no display - help needed

Guys I have an issue with a pc - When turned on it appears to power up, lights come on, dvd drive works etc. However there is no display to the monitor and the graphics card (5850) fans are going at full speed.

I took the graphics card out and plugged the monitor straight into the mobo at the back and still same issue, no display. The other fans are running at normal speed.

Any ideas what the problem could be? I assumed graphics card but no display either when plugged directly into mobo confused me...
 
Did you shut the computer down properly, take out the GPU then boot with the monior plugged into the mobo?

If you get post messages come up. I would say the GPU is dead.

It's the same reason my 560ti is going back to OcUK as we speak.
