I have an ASUS X99-A USB 3.1 motherboard with a I7 5820K CPU.

A couple of weeks ago, I removed a USB stick after going through the correct procedure.
Upon removal, I got a message saying that the drive was still in use. Obviously, a mouse click was not recognised. The computer froze, so I pressed the reset button and the computer attempted to reboot.
Since that moment, the computer has never fully booted up properly.
It usually gets as far as inviting me the opportunity to enter bios before it shuts down abruptly and reboots over and over. It sometimes just sits on the invite to the bios. It will not allow me to enter the bios.

I have tried the following:- tried another GPU, tried another C drive from another computer, tried booting up from a USB stick, tried another power supply in case mine was failing, tried removing memory sticks but nothing changed. I even removed the bios battery and also tried the bios flashback or whatever it is called, which according to the flashing light, was successful, but had no effect on my issue.

I was under the impression that the only damage that could be done by not correctly removing a USB stick, is damaging the stick and nothing else.

So, before I give in and take it to a computer repair shop, does anyone have any ideas please?

My guess as a non expert is that either my motherboard or CPU has been damaged.

Steve...

Which usb socket was the drive plugged into? If it was one of the front panels have you unplugged the usb header from the motherboard?

It was a top socket, which I suppose does count as a front socket on most computers.
Good idea, I will try that when I can.

I have done that, and I can now get into the bios and am able to re-install an OS. Looks like it has saved me a trip to my local computer repair shop for a diagnosis. :D

So, I assume the chip that controls the front / top usb ports has been damaged when I removed that usb stick?

I am very grateful for the suggestion. Pretty obvious one really, but I didn't consider it.

The connector itself - the one on the case - may have been damaged. Is the relevant USB controller hub showing in Device Manager?

Good stuff. Just to re-iterate Journey's point, best thing to do when you can't boot a PC and have exhausted the basic options is to strip it right down, unplug everything non-essential and then if it's working start plugging stuff back in.
