Computer Will Not Get Past Blue-Screen

Hey chaps,

A friend's just rung me up in a frenzy because his computer crashed tonight and he has a hand-in, of some presumably horrid and important sort, due in tomorrow. I couldn't give him an informed answer with what he's told me, so whilst I make google searches I thought I'd post here to speed-up the process (before he goes mad with panic). Process of events goes as follows (as far as he told me):

He was playing a game when his colours revert to 8-bit and computer cuts to blue screen of death. He manually shuts down and on restarting, regardless of which option he chooses (safe-mode etc.) he gets a blue-screen with a message asking to check for system viruses etc. I may have misheard, but I believe he had a similar problem in the past, has tried the same tactic, and has now ended up with another message saying floppy diskette failure.

I can retrieve other system specs. if needed, but for now all I know is he's running on XP Pro.

If anyone could give me some solutions to pass on, or at least a likely source of the problem (I think he's very worried about his HDD getting screwed) then it would be hugely appreciated.

IF he was playing a game and his colours went back to 8 bit try taking the graphics card out (Presuming he has one) and try using the on-board graphics card, most modern motherboards have them.

Maybe his graphics card just got too hot and toasted itself. Worth a try though, he will still be able to get his work or whatever he has off there.

Also, maybe the BSOD error code would help out a bit

wat i would say u could do is load a live cd of linux if it loads its software related if tht dies it is most probably hardware then check his gpu for errors first of all then ram ect.

Live CD is the best solution to get his documents off.

Could be faulty graphics card, might be worth just running one memory stick at a time just to check its not the RAM.
