hi. I've got a amd64 desktop with mandriva linux and win xp pro.

last night i hibernated windows and everything went fine. I don't have any alarms setup to wake the computer and didn't; organise any defrags or anything like that.

this mornign at 11.20 the computer woke up by itself.

my question is what can make a comptuer wake up? There is an ethernet port but there's nothing connected to it so i don't think it was wake on lan. There's a wireless pci card but i guess that's powered down when the system is hibernating?

any help is appreciated i dont; really liek the computer turning on by itself unless i have contof the time.

When you say hibernate....isn't moving the mouse enough to restore it out of hibernation? In which case something that might have vibrated or something in such a way the mouse moved sufficiently to start the system up? (awful grammar sorry I'm too hung over to make much sense atm)

The computer was hibernated, not on standby. This is when all the memory is copied to the hard disk and the computer powers off completley. To turn it back on i need to press the power button.

If the computer was off, why would a power failure turn it on? if it resumes state after a power failure then it should have stayed off.

So is there no way of teling a program to start the computer from a hibernate state? Although I haven't instaled anything new recently and have never seen this happen before.

My pc tends to turn itself on regardless of hibernation, sleep or being completely off, if the power is turned off and on again at the wall.
Could just be my machine though! lol

Similar thing happened to me once, except I shutdown the PC, only to find it ON when I woke up in the morning. What I think happened is some program failed to shutdown properly, and stopped the PC from switching off, I didn't notice as I had already switched the monitor off.

Might be what happened to you, or not ;)

the computer was definately off becuase i heard it turning on.

It botoed into linux first because that's the first option in the menu so it wasn't its previous state.

tested the power and if i turn the power off and on when the comptuer's off it doesn't start it up.

i haven't set any wake on lan options (left them at default) but the ethernet cable isn't plugged in. can you walke on lan on wireless?

annd hax0rd? what does that mean?

at first i thought someone was trying to hack into my computer but it doesn't make sense because how can they wake it up?

Reboot due to power failure or something?
Similar thinking here. If the BIOS is set to restart 'always' on power loss, then if you've had a power failure or whatever, then as soon as the PC gets that power back again, the PC fires up.

Do you have the BIOS set to start up in the event of a power failure?

I wouldnt worry about it, my mums pc often boots without reason ( about once / month ) and my pc accasionally goes out of hibernate or just turns on when off... ( well just happened twice actually )

Also what is this about power failures? Even when i do the psu switch on back on and off pc isnt booting or something, also hibernating shouldnt use any power, as i once had it off the power for over 12 hours, and still properly loaded out of the hibernation after...

Just turn off the switch on the back of the psu for the night and you'll save about 7 quid / year on power too, also no way it'll boot without power :) .

Mine did this once, I discovered that I had connected it to a phone line, (I found an RJ 11 port in the back of my computer a few days before).

My computer kept switching on everytime a phone call was made to the house, it made me wonder for a while, but when I disconnected the phone line everything went fine.

after reading this thread, i just learnt what hibernate actually does, im wondering now, why doesnt everyone use hibernate??? Any disadvantages?

Saves a couple of mins for most people starting at XP starting up??

Basically, i can click hibernate instead of turn off, and then when i switch on my pc it will go straight to my desktop? I normally switch it off at the plug, this wont affect it will it?, as it transfers the memory to the hard drive.

cheers,

If the BIOS is set to power on with a power loss it will boot up once that power has been restored. The 'proper' option in this instance would be to resume the last state - if the PC was on, then once the power is back, I'd like the PC on again please - if the power was off, then leave it as such.

The default for most boards is to just do nothing.

Devices can wake the PC, some devices have their own 'Wake-on' features.

Check device manager.

Alternatively it could be a scheduled task waking the PC.
