Right, i have a x58 gigabyte mobo, an i7950, 12 gb ram...
Everything is at stock atm, but i was hoping to overclock my i7 though all my ram slots are filled (6) and i heard that this makes it harder for you to reach a stable overclock..
This morning i took out 6 of the 12gb of ram, as i can always use it in a different system or sell it, if thats what it is going to take to reach a decent overclock.
After removing the RAM, i cant get the PC to boot at all, it switches on but there is no output to the displays at all.. could anyone tell me what the problem might be? Ive even tried plugging all the ram back in and running with 1 stick, nothing solves the issue, I've tried my brothers GPU in there, and that doesnt fix it either.

thanks in advance

You need to make sure the ram is in slots 2, 4 and 6.

Edit: Just re-checked, you fsil to boot with only one, 2nd for trying a CMOS reset but make sure the ram is in the correct slots.

I checked the motherboard manual etc, ram was in the right slots, but it seems like i must have been using 1 faulty stick? is it possible that my system was running relatively stable before with 12gb ram, but having 1 faulty stick? would i have seen any problems with this?

anyhow, seems to be fine now, running on 6gb of ram

Not sure.. You seem to have found a faulty stick.. Put that back in on it's own and run memest86+ (don't worry about dual channel configuration at this point - you're just testing the modules.. nothing else). If that fails but works with the other modules then you have it confirmed. Use the same bank when performing the test though, because if it fails in slot #1 , for example but not slot #2, you could have a faulty memory controller or motherboard. My guess is that it's just the one stick.

just seems strange that ive been using the 12gb for almost a year now, and the computer hasnt crashed at all, though ive never pushed it to use all 12gb
