computer won't get past the BIOS

hey all,

currently have a computer from a friend to have a look at and try fix. the problem is when you power it up it automatically goes into the BIOS and says something along the lines of major error on last shutdown please check cpu, dimm settings etc.

but if i change these back to default and then exit then the computer will just hang and the monitor will not switch on.

am a little uneasy about taking other peoples computers apart so wondering if anyone would know the probable cause. it must be hardware but wouldn't know what?

Try resetting the BIOS via the jumper on the mobo, the other thing it could be is the battery on the mobo could be dead.
