Normally a PSU will go down rather than take components out first. (Though there are plenty of stories of truly cataclysmic failure, it is their very memorability that skews the 'remembered' statistics).
Odds are it was just a dodgy HDD, especially as it was a Corsair. Given then spectacular nature of the HDD's demise though you would be wise to test the PSU if you possibly can.
Your next step is to RMA the HDD, noting the dangerous nature of it's failure!
