Hi,

Me and my mate upgraded our computers recently and decided to put our old parts together to make another one.

From my PC:
- 790i Ultra sli
- E8500
- 4GB mushkin blackline

From his:
550w antec PSU
GTX 260
Samsung spinpoint

We put it together but when we try to boot the system will power on for around 5 seconds then just stop.

The motherboard shows a FF code on the little pannel during this time, and the lights at the top go red.

So far we tried:
-resetting the Cmos,
-reseating all the power cables

Putting his old Asus maximus 2 formula + Q8600 in and it booted as normal.

It seems like my MB/CPU has gone? but I don't understand how seeing as it was working fine for me last week.

The MB still lights up ect when it tries to boot so im kinda confused, Is there anything else I can try cause I hope it's not dead :S

You haven't mentioned reseating the E8500 on the 790i, as that is what 'seems' to be the cause.
Once done, test it. If still fails, then take the ram and GTX out, see if you get a post response or it just powers off again.

I tried powering it with just the MB / RAM / CPU / case fans just after that, and it stayed powered up fine, so I'm thinking my stuff draws more power or something? don't have another PSU at hand to check atm

id try reseating the lot. CPU, RAM, GPU etc. Make sure all cabling is pushed right in. As said here remove the mobo battery whilst doing all of this and put back in before you try and turn on again.

Also do a little power dance whilst your friend turns it on lol.

Im going on a whim here and believe it to be psu related. Have you tried a different one?

FF on a 790i same as a 780i means its on, It sounds to me like the psu could be faulty, Although I've seen this before on a 780i and it turned out the bios needed pushing in ( it was a little loose.)
