Hey guys,

I have been building machines for nearly a decade now but this is new to me!

I have built a reasonable machine for someone based around an Abit IP35-E motherboard, using a ThermalTake 470W PSU, 8400 GS, 2GB Ram and E6420.

The Mobo has the latest BIOS, windows is up to date and I have all the latest drivers on.

When i tell windows to shut it down.. it does, the machine turns off, then approx 4 seconds later turns itself back on!! I just cant make it stay off bar forcing it by holding the power button for 3 seconds.

Has anyone come across this before? Is it a faulty component? If so anyone know which one, or is it something else?

Any help would be much appreciated as I dont have a clue whats going on :\

have you made sure there is nothing in the bios that could be causing it to start up, like wake on lan/keyboard activity or anything like that?

yup checked all that, all is looking fine on that front.

All i can think is its a faulty PSU but Im hoping someone else might know something or other first as to test would mean taking my main PC apart, wghich i REALLY dont want to do seeing as its all properly routed and clipped into an Antec P180 :(

Check the front pannel connections on your motherboard, could be something shorting or connected wrong thats turning it on all the time.

PK!

Are you actually shutting it down or telling it to sleep? The 'power' button on the start menu tells it to sleep by default. If that's what you're doing, an over-active optical mouse will bring it back out of sleep on it's own.

mine does the same thing. shut down, start up again. ive noticed when i shut mine down my 360 hd-dvd drives goes nuts right before the pc starts up again. i honestly havent bothered finding out what causes it yet lol :o

I assume that the 360 is turned on? Sounds like it's trying to share media, so the 360 is turning the PC on out of standby. IF my machine's sleeping and I try to look at it form the 360, it brings it back out of standby, as it should.

Just realised no-one's said they're using vista. If you're not I'm talking rubbish :D

Hi guys,

Sorry for the delay.

I have done all of the above yes, including removing everything, and yes im on XP so shutdown means shutdown (took me a wile to work that out on my Vista machine ;))

Looks like i have little choice other than removing my PSU and seeing if it switches off using that...

good thinking batman. but i dont have a 360 :p

i sometimes have that problem but comes back on quicker when i put my computer back from moving it to do something, i dont know what causes it/fixes it, just seems to happen randomly :(

I've just had another idea, have you got BSOD's turned on or is your computer set to restart when it crashes? it could be failing to shutdown properly, crashing and restarting instead of turning off.

PK!

Well, im pretty sure its not BSOD'ing.

Took the PSU and Mobo back, they tested them seperately and together and they didnt do it!

I'm a little stumped... going to put it all back together in a bit and see if it now works :S

Had the exact same problem. Take the network cable out and see if it still does it. If it turns off correctly turn off wol.
