My brother seems to have broken his relatively new pc!

The story goes..blue screened, then restarted and worked fine for an hour. Then just turned off.

Now you press the button on the case and nothing happens, no power at all.

I can transfer parts from mine to elimate the fault, but whats the best order to try things? I would have thought PSU, its the OCZ modular 520 off the top of my head, but the master on/off switch on the back of the psu is still illumated when plugged in, so would this not be off if the psu was broken?

First, strip the pc down to psu, cpu, mobo, 1 hard drive, 1 dvd drive and 1 memory stick. Then if it still doesnt boot, try the different memory sticks. If it doesn't post still, either psu or mobo mate. Same what happend to my new build last crimbo, worked then it would restart randomly then just gave in and kept restarting. It was the mobo.

Open the case and look at the mobo - Now for my motherboard, there's a light to indicate that powers getting to it - do you have this?

Sometimes i've experienced this, and then resetting the cmos (moving the jumper to the reset position, powering on, then moving it back) helps things.

Turned the switch on, on the psu and then on the case, smelt of burning and psu started squeeling. No power was provided to any components though.

Stripped out his psu and put mine in there and everything worked fine.

So looks like the Hiper 580 Type R modular is dead. I remember reading quite a few problems with these.

Anyone know the warranty on these?
