This is very strange and I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation.

Turned it off on Friday night, went to start as normal yesterday but nothing. When I hit the power button there's no flicker of reaction. I've checked the connections to the mobo and all seems in place. I've tried different wall sockets too. The weird thing is that I know there is power through the PSU because the mousemat is still lit up which is USB connected.

Any ideas why the thing couldn't be working?

I had the same thing a while back, and swapping the PSU cured it. The old PSU (one of the famous Hiper Type-Rs) still showed signs of life (motherboard & USB peripheral lights), but the PC just wouldn't fire up, no matter what I tried.

For once my policy of always keeping a cheap PSU in reserve (if only for testing purposes) paid off. Hopefully your problem will be cheaper to fix, but it does sound familiar.

PS I haven't tried to work out what's wrong with my Type-R because after three years I think I probably used up all my luck. :-)

Yeah, I have an old Akasa PSU in the cupboard. Looks like I'll have to try that. Sod it. And that Corsair one I had was supposed to be decent.

Even decent PSUs fail sometimes, the difference is that they don't take your whole system with them. Besides it may not be that, nevertheless it's a good place to start if you have a spare.

The problem is that the old PSU doesn't have enough connectors for the gfx card. And I really don't want to go out and buy another but I may not have a choice.

Do you have any of those Molex to PCI-E adaptors? It's only for testing after all. Maybe an older PCI-E card that doesn't need so many connectors just to see if it'll get up and running.

Right, I just went out and bought a new PSU and new CPU and gfx card. I can't even get a signal to the monitor now and I've tried it with two gfx cards. When the computer starts up, it turns itself off after about five seconds then restarts. CPU fan doesn't spin either through the case fans do. Here's the current spec

Q8400
GA-965P-DS3
5870
6GB ddr2
3 X sata hdd

Any ideas what could be causing this?

CPU fan is probably controlled by motherboard so it may not start with the case fans.

Have you reset CMOS? A new CPU being fitted would benefit from it. You may also find that the motherboard needs a bios update to work with that CPU, although I could be way off here as this is a total guess.

Thanks, I really am at a loss here and am loathe to go out and get another motherboard in case that's not it. I reset CMOS, doesn't seem to make any difference.
