Hi all,

I had my friend last night to fix his pc. His computer kept turning off and got to the stage where windows would load. So we tried to reinstall Windows but that crashed during installation.

So then we took his hard drive from his pc, put it in my pc and formatted it. We then put it back into his pc and it now won't turn on. We didn't touch anything else just took the hard drive out.

Any advice on what to do next would be very helpful. I'm thinking it can either be the power supply (which I very much doubt) or the motherboard (nvidia 650i ultra) but im not sure why it would suddenly stop doing anything.

Thanks

Check you have not dislodged any of the components or connectors. Any signs of power to the board? Remove all but basic components, one memory stick etc.

What psu is it?

What other hardware? any recent hardware changes or upgrades?

If there is power, download a bootable iso for memtest and create the CD, run memtest on all the memory and also individual sticks.

Download and create an ubuntu live disk. see if the system boots from that.

There is no power visible on the board and when you pressure the on button nothing happens. I can't remember the details of the psu but it wasn't cheap. There has been no new hardware for years, it has an 8800gt graphics card 4g ram ( again would have to look for the brand).

I will try taking out all the components that aren't required as you suggested. Then would the next step be new mb if the psu is ok?

Silly question

Have you checked the kettle lead fuse and any other fuses in the line?

Yea I tried different cables that were running my pc fine. I just can't believe we could have broken the mb just taking the hd out. I will investigate more when I get back from work.

Take everything out apart from RAM,CPU and display and try turning it on. Also make sure you haven't caught the lead that connects to power button on front.
