Computer won't turn on

My computer was previously working fine. I was trying to get some data off some old hdds so turned it off, plugged one of the drives in then powered back on. At first nothing happened but after pressing the power button a few times and mashing the keyboard it started after a couple of seconds of inactivity. I then powered off again, disconnected the first drive and connected another one. Now I can't get it to power on at all. When I press the power button nothing happens, I tried removing the power switch header on the mb and touching a screw driver between the pins but no luck, so it's not the power switch. The IR receiver I have connected via usb has the led on so there's power there, but I can't get the thing to start. I've tried clearing cmos to no avail and I'm a little stuck where to go from there. Any help would be much appreciated

specs:
Sapphire Radeon R9 280X
4690k
Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3
Superflower Leadex Gold 650W
8GB Teamgroup ram

have you disconnected the second HDD you connected up which stopped the PC from booting?

does any fans come on at all or anything power up and then down when you press the power button?

I had disconnected the hdd which caused the problem.

I have however managed to get it to start up now. I moved it and was about to start removing components but thought I'd just try one last time and it powered on fine so I'm a little confused

Anyway it works now (for the time being) but thanks for the reply

Following my last post it had been working well but the last few day's it's been pausing after pressing the button before turning on. I'll take it apart at the weekend to check for shorting of the mobo but does anyone have any other suggestions for possible causes that I can try in the mean time?
