A couple of things to check for:

Is his system overheating? When my old CPU started to overheat using ME i used to get a lot of hangs and reboots. I fitted a new cooler and it was mostly fine afterwards.

How long since he reinstalled ME? I never did like ME and found I needed to reinstall it at least once a month, otherwise it became too unstable.

Download http://www.ubuntu.com/ - burn to a CD and run it from the CD. It contains Memtest on the CD and also runs Linux straight off the disc with no need to install. If Memtest is error free and Ubuntu loads and is stable I'd put it down to ME. If it's not stable under Ubuntu, you know it's likely a hardware problem.

What PSU has he got? I had problems with a PC upgrade because I didn't know to upgrade the PSU as well. I was running a 1.6ghz with 512ram and 128mbgfx etc on an old 250watt PSU lol
