After giving my sythe ninja a good saw so that it would fit in my evga 680i it fits nice and tightly. However my temps are ridiculous, 60c idle and it goes up easily to 70+ with TAT :S I so wanted to overclock the e66 but with stock temps like that it looks like a pipe dream.

So I've ripped off the hsf, assuming it wasn't attached correctly and bizarely it seems only the edges of my ninja are making contact with the cpu? There is a thin line of thermal paste around the edge but none in the middle.

Are c2ds concave or something? why would it make contact around the edge but not in the middle. Defective? Stupid hsf? Ideas?

Christ, WHAT! File down my cpu? That's insane...

Surely there must be a less ridiculous way to solve this then rubbing bits off my chip. For example, using tons of arctic silver?

You could,

Change the CPU.
Alter the shape of the heatsink to only contact the centre of the CPU.
Make the base of the heatsink convex to make it fit the concave CPU.
Take the concave IHS off the CPU.
Lap the CPU.
Leave it as it is.
 
Short of lapping it, AS basically recommend using more paste to fill the space, rather than a small dot in the middle.

another vote for lapping the cpu, there really isn't a more logical way to get those temps down! applying too much AS5 mite not always have the desired effect but lapping will definately get you better temp drops!

Really not that difficult. Very painless and sounds like exactly what is required in your case.

The evga i680 has 4 black chip thingies on the top of the heatsink mount, as the ninja sythes base is circular and not square, you cannot clamp the heatsink down without chopping the mounting bracket or damaging the R50? chips.

Also as a slight rant, whoever thought of putting a really dodgy cap next to one of the mounting holes was a real prat, every time I fiddle with the hsf I'm scared it's gonna snap off.

Filling the space with as5 seems like a crap solution :( at least compared to lapping, right, I'm gonna lap it, this stupid idea really can't go wrong ;).

Thanks to whoever did that lapping guide, will try it when I can find some of those grade sandpaper.

Slight EDIT: I have a tube of AS3 here, from my old P4 build, is it really that much different from AS5? I'm reluctant to order just one tube of AS5 when I already have loads of AS3.

Oooohhhh, I get you. You must be using the Ninja Revision B.

I'm using Revision A, which is fastened on by two "scaffold like" mounts that clips on the Ninja fasten to. The mounts tower over the capacitors on every motherboard I've tried so far, so I'm not sure why Scythe decided to alter the design so drastically. :(

If I were you, I'd try to get hold of a Revision A, truly universal.

Yes it's the Rev B, Doh. Not a problem now anyway, me and my good friend mr saw solved the problem in 30mins :P
 
There seems to be two different IHS', ones with a straigh edged wall and one which kind of curves.

The straight one seems to be less curved. I lapped mine, used quite a lot of water, enough in fact that my E6600 probably would have felt safer if I gave it arm bands. :)
 
I lapped my E6400 and got around 5oC lower temps. Was a bad IHS and i could clearly see the bad edges, especially when lapping the corners were way way higher than the center.

Nope. :(

I need to get the guts to do this, my idle temps are 35c (at stock v) with watercooling...terrible IMO and I get 55c load!

I will eventually get round to doing it :)

Any pics of your new chip Baka^Ni??
