I am playing around with the idea of building a tablet based on the NVidia Ion Platform, but there are a few features I would like to include and I am not sure if there are consumer hardware modules to do it.
Firstly this tablet will be specifically for vehicular use and therefore it needs to be able to do 3G Data, GPS and preferably voice over the GSM network (obviously VoiP will be available using 3G data but VoiP to cell are expensive so I would like to use an existing cellular plan which gives free or cheap cell to cell calls as my current phone plan gives.)
Building the tablet itself with 3G Data is the easy part - adding the cellular voice part is the tricky bit.
Is anyone aware of any hardware which can be fitted to say USB or PCI-E that will provide both voice and 3G data? Do existing USB 3G Dongles permit voice as well as data if they are fitted with a regular 3G phone sim?
My initial thoughts are to hack apart a 3G dongle and hardwire it to a USB port inside the case to provide the 3G Data.
Spec should be as follows:
Capacitive 7-12" Touch Screen (12" preferably but price may be an issue) - Densitron might be a suitable supplier for this.
NVidia Ion for the Dual Core Atom (I forget the name of the board)
120GB SSD Drive
4GB RAM
Onboard GPS for integration with Google Maps/TomTom
OS would be either Android or Maemo (preferably Android)
I was thinking one way of getting GSM voice would be to hack apart an existing cell phone and transplant the internals straight into the case of the tablet then try and figure out some way to interface it for voice as well as tethering it to the device for data.
This project is in the very early stages of planning but I would appreciate any input especially on getting GSM voice integrated into the device.
Purpose of the device would be for Voice, Internet, Gaming, Multimedia and Sat Nav.
Screen resolution needs to be 1440x900 minimal - if I could get 1080p then even better but I am not holding out too much hope on that one...
