Concerned for a friend.

Didnt really want to say this but;

He's gone as far as joining a rifle club.

He is trying to build what he has called it, a life raft. Not an actual boat but a group of friends and family of different trades, ie carpenter, engineer, doctor etc.

It makes me sad to see such a good mate, go like this.

Please keep it serious too guys, I dont mind the odd joke but I am worried the thread will get derailed.
I'll ask again, anything happened major in his life recently? Talk it out with him?

I actually don't think it is completely out of the question that sometime this century there will be some sort of major shakeup of civilisation, whether it be due to natural disasters, terrorists/warmongering (e.g. WMD used against the West), disease or some sort of infrastruture collapse (financial or otherwise) that results in people needing to fend for themselves a lot more.

That said, I think trying to prepare for it isn't necessarily the best use of one's time/resources.

Am I the only one thinking it makes sense.. in a "If.." situation? I'd love to have this kind of thing ready for the worst. I often look at crossbows and think.. as above, in a zombie apocalypse..

I dont know what to suggest though, ask him what he's thinking about work and such.. don't let him quit work and end up penniless. I'd check in on him at the very minimum every week. Make sure he's keeping the basics of the working world as it is.

All you need is a knife, a book about the wildlife and plants of britain and to have watched the ray mears bushcraft series. Personally i reckon i am prepared enough to live off the land if needs be.

I've got a mate who does the same. You need to have a discussion about it in order to really figure out why he's doing it and then try to get him to get some professional help.

Oh you know dirtydog? Small world!

I'd tell him not to worry too much, in the event that the civilized world collapses and we return to an primitive agrarian society, it'll basically be just like we're all living in Wales so I doubt he'd notice any difference.

So long as he doesn't let it get in the way of real life then let him do whatever he wants, it's an unusual hobby but nothing more.

Whatever you do, do not let him discover the controversial channel on sky. I am deadly serious on this. I know someone who takes it a bit too seriously.

He doesn't sound that mad, none of us have ever lived through a serious depression before and it is all a bit scary. If prepping makes him feel more secure then let him get on with it.
There isn't a whole lot we can do in the UK anyway, it's not like we have hundreds of miles of wilderness to hide in like they have in the USA.
