Concerned for a friend.

The UK is coming up to 70mil people on a small island so if it did all go **** up there's no way everyone could just live off the land!

Crazyness can happen though so maybe your mate preparing for the worst isn't such a bad thing so long as it doesn't affect his current life?

Reminds me of a link a mate sent me a while back about someone's story of living during the Balklands war and how they had to survive - http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=189395

I like the fact that almost everyone here is making fun of the OP's friend and saying hes crazy or has real issues.

The fact is that he could be right, hes the smartest one here and taking action in what MIGHT happen in the future, think of it like that rather than all of your silly comments towards him

Isn't this just Survivalism?

I have a grab bag with all the stuff I would need to survive in worst case scenario in but really it is just my bag of gear for when I teach bushcraft/survival skills but I keep it close by (in my bedroom I don't carry it round with me). As others have said everyone (read as "every man") makes plans like this but not sure how many have gone the whole hog and build a proper bunker. I know I have run over various plans of "what if x happens when I am at y" but I can't say I have ever seen anyone act upon those thoughts.

Not necessarily him going crazy but it cant hurt to maybe have him seen to by a professional of some form?

Also when the **** does hit the fan kill him and take all his stuff, job done.

Probably not a bad idea. Silver and gold wont be worth anything though when the **** does hit the fan. Silver and gold have zero function in this kind of situation.

Stock piling water and non perishable food would not be a bad idea.

I once travelled through indonesia with a group of lads, one of the older guys said he had spend a couple of grand on a nuke suit and had built a bunker also...

Doesn't sound that crazy, investing in silver is smart - our debt based currency is likely to go down the swanny at this rate & if we get another red-neck republican in the white-house we could be looking at WW3 when they start invading Iran & chain/russia get involved.

Just because he doesn't get wasted every weekend, buy useless things he doesn't need it don't mean he's crazy.

Besides, if the system does fall apart you will be glad to have him as a friend.

Note : He may also be crazy, I don't know him well enough to make that call

Edit- If he starts wearing tin-foil on his head, to stop the governments mind reading machines - then you can be afraid for him.

I would love to see some photos of the bunker, what's it like? Thread needs photos or it could all be lies and you are the mental one.

I'd like a bunker or basement just for the fun of it, a propa man cave and cool thing to show people.

All you need is a knife, a book about the wildlife and plants of britain and to have watched the ray mears bushcraft series. Personally i reckon i am prepared enough to live off the land if needs be.

You will also be missing the skill and experience aspect - watching some telly and carrying a knife will not get you anywhere.

Preparing meat/fish for consumption is beyond the knowledge/ability/skill of > 99% of the population. These skills are passed person to person and are pretty much dead in the UK general popultion.

Wrong silver, gold and other metals are the only thing that keeps value. Currencies come and go but gold and silver has always stayed and ends up being used again till someone thinks making a new currency is a good idea.

As for the OP time are bad and with current measure are probaly going to get worse. A fall of the currency would be far off from the moment by preventive measures in place, but unless we deal with our economic problems its going to happen, and when it does it happens fast.

I would probally talk to him about it and ask where hes getting such information from because there are a lot of nutters screaming the world is going to end next week, year, we cant be saved, etc.

In the end a currency failure is a real possibility, if it happens you wont be thinking he is crazy. But at the same time it shouldnt impact on his day-to-day life, being prepared is one thing but being obsessive is another.

Only because people lust over the metals. They have very few real useful properties, if peoples first priority is food, then they will soon lose value. Very few people will be willing to barter essentials for gold.

Their price is set by the "greater fool theory" mostly.

Tell him he's got it all wrong the world won't end up like book of Eli it will be like mad max he needs to buy a big v8 car a leather jacket and stockpile fuel

Numerous economies have collapsed throughout the 20th century, the UK is not immune. In such an event and given the youth today it's quite possible the Tottenham riots would be made to look miniscule.
