Concerns / thoughts please

Morning all,

Over the weekend I rebuilt my computer with the specs in my signature. I added the 16gb of ram to my pre clocked build from OCuK I had asked a few posts about, which so far seems stable. (lowered the voltage from 1.65 to 1.50 for the DRAM as per Plec's suggestion, the OCUK profile is saved so I can reload it if needs be.)

However, my temperatures are a concern. As part of the rebuild I added an Antec Kuhler 620, with a Gentle Typhoon 1450 as a exhaust fan pulling air through the radiator.

The temperatures, with the OCuK overclock (at 1.416 vcore i add) are:

Idle: 50
Playing BF3 @ about 75-90% load: mid 70's, highest peak was 83 on 1 core when it was under full load.

I have not yet ran a intelburntest for fear of it getting to hot.

My Venom air cooler had it around 50 at idle but only about 70ish under load but was loud hence me adding the Kuhler.

Now, is this: me fitting the Kuhler wrongly? Badly fitted TIM?

or is it the fact I probably have a poor chip that OCuK had to really ramp up the volts to get to the guaranteed stable clock of 4.00Ghz?

And what do I do next? Tonight I had planned on reseating the cooler, replacing the TIM with AS5. I was also going to change the fan direction and have it blow into the case, as some people have said this has improved their temps.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as im quite concerned about the temps.

Also, if i cannot get the temps down at all, how much would people recomend lowering my vcore down to, if i was to change my base clock from 191 to 181x21 for a 3.8Ghz clock? 0.05v? down from 1.416 to 1.366? or is that too much of a drop?
 
We can't tell you what your system can do....... only your system can tell you that.

Set the clock to 181x21, then lower the voltage a little. Stress test..... then if it passes, lower it again. Repeat until the system becomes unstable, and then put it back on the lowest setting it passed the stress test.

Thanks for the reply Jimbob and the advice on what to do if i decide to lower the overclock.

My main concern/worry is the temperatures, are they so high because of the voltage that ocuk have had to use, or does it imply that my cooling solution is inadequate/malfunctioning?
 
Quick update on this issue:

Last night I took my cooler off and decided to reapply the thermal paste. When I went ot take it off i noticed that the bottom right screw seemed to be quite loose and would not come off. I worked out that I had tightened it too tight and when I was trying to undo it, the metal leg post was spinning in the plastic back plate and not undoing.

I ended up having ot take the motherboard out the case to get to the backplate as the CM690-ii has a tiny cutout that is not big enough. Eventually i managed to remove the cooler via some pliers holding the metal leg and a screwdriver to remove the screw.

Kuhler 620 Users please take note - do not tighten the screws too much or you will not be able to get it off again!

Once finally removed I cleaned off the thermal paste and pplied a grain of rice sized dollop of Arctic Silver.

Put the cooler back on and only used my fingers to tighten the thumb screws, and not my screw driver this time. You can feel if your gentle when they lock into place.

Reassembled the computer, I put the cooler on upside down, the radiator with the pipes at the top, and the fan blowing in and not exhausting this time.

Changing all these things appears to of worked quite a lot, with the temps when playing BF3 at about 65-70 most of the time (with the chip running at about 85-90% load).

Will run some intel burn test tonight when I get home but initial thoughts are it seems better for general use.
