Hi all, I've got some fence posts to concrete in but the temperature looks like it will drop to -2 tonight, -3 tomorrow night. If I was to concrete the posts in the ground and cover with some hessian do you think it would be ok. Im thinking with most of the concrete in the ground + the thermal reaction ( not sure what it's called ) it probably would be but not sure .

What d'ya reckon ?

Thanks.

Would it be feasible to use a quick set concrete so it does most/all of the curing during the day? (check the instructions on the bag).

I think postcrete sets to "you can stop holding the post" in about 15 minutes, and fully in a few hours.

If you're deep enough the group temp won't really change. If your worries yes hessian would be good. We always hessian concete in any real extreme, rain wind too hot too cold etc.

As above postcrete goes off quite quickly.

You need to insure that the concrete does not freeze or it will simply not set. However with postcrete that's pretty much a non-problem. You have a short (8-10mins max) so mix in the whole rather than attempt to mix then pour in the hole.

When I did a telescope pier the first night had well below zero temperature so I put it under tarps and a heater.
