I'm interested in purchasing a good quality condenser microphone, preferably with USB input, for under £100, for a wide variety of audio recording (e.g. piano, guitar, vocals) but particularly Foley FX if possible. Basically I want to have a bit of fun with it.

I'd like something with a long cable so I can keep it at distance from my recording PC, and something without batteries (phantom power over USB? if this is possible).

One brand I've noticed for being sub-£100 is Samson, but any tips on models welcome.

You're aiming yourself in a pretty niche area :)

I've personally never used any USB microphone for professional recording, and i don't believe we have ever used them at work. Looking around on the web it seems Samson do a few USB condensor mics, although it doesnt really state whether or not +48v is provided via USB, or if batteries are required.

If its for foley work, then either a condensor or ribbon mic will be no doubt be better than a standard dynamic. However, the specs of the Samson ones are pretty poor on paper, and for £50, i would have to try them out first to be sure.

In my opinion, i would save up and get a cheap PCI/Firewire/USB interface that has phantom power and get a decent condensor mic. It'll cost you a lot more but your recordings will sound so much nicer, and will be better suited for future recordings. With USB you have very little control over pre-amp control, and without a proper interface you will encounter latency issues.
