am expecting my Synology DS211 to arrive any day now..

would like to prepare myself to configure it as a central storage device, which would be partitioned into 3 or 4 drives.

I've got 2 PCs on a wireless home network.

I would like these two PCs to basically save files directly on the Synology rather than their local drives.

Can anyone recommend a good guide for the above and any things I should be aware of (am a newbie when it comes to networking!) :D

Currently my wireless home network consists of
a) a wireless adsl modem router (to which the main internet line is connected and is kept downstairs)
b) the above is hardwired to an Apple Airport Extreme (kept upstairs) which provides the wireless connectivity to the 2 PCs upstairs

I would be hardwiring the Synology to the wireless modem (which is hardwired to the Airport Extreme, per above)

thanks

It should be pretty straight forward the synology setup has a lot of wizards that help with basic setup of how you want your disks raid 0 or 1 etc.

Once the drives are setup you just create relevent folders on the synology (if you enable dnla it will create the video, music + photo folders automatically) set permissions on who can access them, then using the synology assistant app it will help map drives on each of your machines so you can save directly to the NAS.

The synology setup pretty much guides first time users through without any hassle and is very good just get the lasted DSM build 3.1 and synology assistant from the web.

Make sure you update it to the latest DSM software first before doing anything.

Im a noob and managed to have it up and running sharing files across 4 devices in about 20 mins...

best thing i bought in ages.

Synology is one company that actually has good documentation on its products and quite fanatical forum support from users.
On top of that, with the well designed web based UI they're very user-friendly too.
You won't go far wrong with any of the Synology NAS range, imho :)
