As the subject says - do the cards have to be the same model/brand etc to work in SLI?

They dont have to be the same brand, but yes, both have to be the same model of card, ie, 2 x gtx 470, you cant sli a 470 and a 480.

Well I got a GTX 260 in there and Ive been getting the urge to spend some money so I thought I might do a comprimise and just get another 260 instead of spending more on something new

How would 2 x GTX 260s compare to a new 460 or 470? I had a quick look in google but didnt see any graphs

GTX 260's in sli at stock will be a bit faster than a single stock 470. Lower max fps with the 470, higher minimums. I recently moved from sli GTX 275's, (pretty comparable to sli 260's) to a 470, (though since added another). However once overclocked the 470 pulls ahead.

Yeah, originally I was thinking of getting a 460 or 470... then I thought of getting twin 460s after reading that they do pretty well... Then my sensible side piped up and suggested I went for something cheaper lol :/

Yeah its starting to sound quite appealing to me :)

I need some kind of SLI cable to link the two don't I? Or did I imagine that?

Yeah it has been a while since I got the mobo though :P so I may need to source another one lol
