Hey folks.
I have recently built a new machine with the following spec
Asus P6T Deluxe v2 motherboard
Core i7 920 Cpu
and 12gb of Corsair TR3X6G1333C9 memory. (on the QVL for the motherboard)
When i boot, sometimes only 8gb of memory shows up instead of the full 12gb
I originally thought this was due to the motherboard compatibility issue.
After 2 days of testing I'm stuck.
I have reseated the CPU, and checked for bent pins on the motherboard (one suggestion from a previous thread)
I have checked all the Dimms individually and they are all fine, checked each of the slots and they all seem to be fine.
The strange thing which is why I'm confused, is on the initial cold boot (computers been left off for an hour or so) it boots with 12gb showing.
if i reboot after the systems been on for about 20 minuites it only shows as being 8gb. If i reboot quite early after the initial cold boot, it retains its full 12gb amount.
This all leads me to think its heat based or possibly voltage?
After doing a few google searches i've noticed quite a few folks with a similar issue to mine (12gb installed only 8gb showing up).
I have tried using Auto settings in the bios as well as configuring all the Dimm settings manually. and it seems to make no difference.
I am considering RMAing the bits, but dont know which bit/s are at fault.
Could this be a CPU problem? as the memory controller is internal? the CPU temps hold pretty consistanly between 35-37 idle and 45-50 under load.
Can memory overheat and cause this? they have individual heatsinks and there seems to be a fair gap between each slot, and they never get "that" hot.
I have sent a mail to Asus to ask them if this is a known issue but if i wait round too long i wont be able to RMA in good faith.
One last note - irrelevant to whether it shows up as 12gb or 8gb the machines stable as a rock, through benchmarks and a good thrashing with Crysis
One other final strangeness.. irrelevant to how much ram shows up, using CPU-z all the memory is shown in the correct slots and correct speed/amounts. just doesn't show correctly in the OS or Bios
Any help would be massively appreciated.
Cheers
