Confused about Apple Mail issue

Hi guys. A switcher here.

Been pretty happy with my Mac experience to date, apart from one issue that's recently come to light. Only in the last few days, I've started using Apple Mail. Until then, when I first got my MBP, I was using a web-client for email access.

However, I finally got my mail archive accross from Outlook, with the intention to use Apple Mail.

Now, I'm getting the following issue.

I have no problems recieving mail (via my mail account on my hosted webspace, and via GMail).
I have no problems sending NEW emails to anybody using either of those accounts.
I have no problems sending NEW emails to myself using either of those accounts (including my HotMail address, which I don't access in any way using Apple Mail).
I have no problems replying to any emails I recieved from myself (so OK if I send from HotMail to hosted account, and reply back using Apple Mail.... OK if I send from hosted account to GMail and reply back using Apple Mail).

HOWEVER.... and this is the issue. If I get any mails from some other party, I find it impossible to reply back. It just sits their in the Outbox (in fact, it takes ages to get from "Sending" to Outbox.
Just tonight, I email two friends. I got a reply back in a couple of minutes. However, if I clicked Reply All, I couldn't get any reply back to them. However, I had no problem composing a new email to them and sending on my reply (without the quotes) to them that way.


Anyone seen anything like this. Given that I can send mails, implies that I've got the right settings for the SMTP stuff, does it not??!!

BTW, I'm using plain text where possible.

Sending mail

It may be a problem with SMTP. ISPs dometimes don't allow anyone to send email via the SMTP ports other than via their own SMTP server to prevent mass spamming being routed via their network - they woul have to take the blame if they did.

Or have I completely missed the point?

I sometimes get a message saying a reply was not possible.. I think it's the ISP as fearby already said.

i would imagine you will need SMTP auth turned on for the hosted webspace, as thats what i have set my to for clients

so check out what settings you need for the hosted site.

Also it may be worth downloading thunderbird and giving that a go see if you have the same issuse's.

Just another thought before i close how many SMTP server have you setup in apple mail?

Just been testing out, using PC Outlook Express on my work laptop. Got one of my collegues to send me mail, and I can reply no problems using those settings.

I'll double check my settings now in Apple Mail, to make sure they are the same.

If that fails, I'll have a quick blast with Thunderbird on the Mac to see if that behaves in a different manner.

Anyway, the authorisation side (on the Server on the hosted space) should be correct now, as shown by the Outlook Express test.

Anyway, what I need to configure is:
Hosted Mail Account:
Incoming Server : mail.xxxxxxxxxxx
Port 25
No SSL

Outgoing Server : mail.xxxxxxxxxxx
Port 110
No SSL

Do NOT log on using Secure Password Authentication
Outgoing Server does NOT require Authentication

GMail Account:
Incoming Server : pop.googlemail.com
Port 995
SSL

Outgoing Server : smtp.googlemail.com
Port 465
SSL

Do NOT log on using Secure Password Authentication
Outgoing Server does require Authentication (same as Incoming)



Will post if I still have issues with Apple Mail.

Seems to working now. Double checked all my settings by entering again. I'm also forcing it to send via my hosted email account, rather than choosing between GMail or Hosted account.
