Confused About UHD ?

1920x1080 LG monitor ( which has HDR enabled )

I am able to play UHD files and they look spectacular, on Youtube and via free trailers off the web.

But im confused because surely I shouldn't be able to play UHD content, just 1080p ?
 
If its HDR capable then the screen would downsample the source to 1080P but still process the HDR metadata.

I have a 1440p screen and can play 4k media (mkv, youtube, etc), just no HDR. The source will be down converted.
