confused about WHAT titan IS

I know its a GPU;)

From reading around and yes I did google, is it using current architecture to bring back the single GPU crown at a mental price in limited production runs but having nothing to do with GTX 7XX series?

Is it me or is this situation pretty rare?
I mean can anyone reference me past instances of this type of thing happening?
Cos I can't think of one myself...

Seems its gonna cost about GTX 690 prices.

I've got all summer to wait for 7 series to come out, these 470's are power hungry m*£$&*"£$&"!

and anyway, in answer to the OP's original question...

Titan is an about to be released GPU from Nvidia that is outside of the "normal" release schedule for GTX series GPU's... it's the chip from their K20 supercomputer / CUDA proffesional cards, slapped on to a gaming board and released in limited numbers at a higher than is normal price tag for a single chip card

some people think this is the chip that was originally rumoured to be the GTX 680

there is another similar-to-6** series chip coming later in the year that will be the 780/770 etc. at a lower price point than Titan

Basically, the main interest in Titan will be for programmers / number crunchers who have so far had to stick with a 580 (or face the prospect of paying £3k for a Tesla card), and for people with 3 screen setups that other multi card setups see diminishing returns on past 3 cards

it is very much a niche card at a price point that reflects both it's niche-ness and it's limited availability

if you were prepared to wait till the end of the year then a GTX780 will most likely provide a similar level of gaming performance for a far lower price point

Titan is merely the 580gtx/480gtx/280gtx card, the 500-550mm2 top end Nvidia card, nothing more or less. The 480gtx did have horrendous yields, used too much power and cost Nvidia a bomb to make due to bad yields(do the math call it $8000 a wafer, if you get 10 cores, or 50, prices changes dramatically, if you get near full yields, 100-150 cores prices get way better, thats manufacturing, to cover R&D/marketing/profit/wages everything you're basically doubling the cost to manufacture for price they sell them at).

Imagine if Nvidia never released the 480gtx or 580gtx because of bad yields, but still built wafers only to sell as professional cards(because when its a $3000 card instead of $600, lower yields don't matter nearly as much), then Nvidia would have still released the 480/580gtx, just in the same way as Titan, a small batch of salavaged cores that didn't make the grade for professional cards.

For a long time Nvidia has made a near 500mm2 core, a 300-350mm2 core, and a 150-200mm2 core. These are usually high end, upper end of midrange, and lower end of midrange, with some kinda 50-80mm2 card that has the lowest number of shaders and sucks balls for gaming. So nothings changed this gen, process technology is just pushing that 500mm2 bracket from, low yields and barely profitable to reallllllly low yields and not at all profitable, for consumer card pricing levels anyway.

What makes that post seem like I'm a mod. If he'd asked in the other thread it would have been answered. Plenty of people in there read all the posts and someone would have answered it.
 
It looks like the leaked 680 GTX spec from when it was being announced before it changed.

I imagine these are going to be hugely marked up by retailers and Nvidia trying to cash in on the limited appeal. If it's priced near 690 prices it seems a pointless buy tbh.

Agreed.

The Titan thread seems to have calmed down for now but I expect it will start losing the plot after Gibbo makes his statement.

As for the OP's question, I would keep an eye out around 2PM for some solid info.

It may well be a variant of the "supposed 680" but only Nvidia will know that and I doubt they will be letting us know :)
