Confused between iPhoto and Photos

Hi,

I have 2 macs, one oldish iMac running a clean install of El Capitan and another Mini running Mountain Lion 10.8.5.

El Capitan has a app called Photos and no iPhoto. Mountain Lion contains my large iPhoto 8 library. I want to upgrade Mountain Lion to El Capitan but am concerned as to what will happen with iPhoto?

Has Photos replaced iPhoto? Or will my iPhoto 8 still exist and work in El Capitan?

If something goes very wrong when I do the upgrade, should I be able to restore everything back to Mountain Lion using Time Machine?

Thanks for any advice, I don't really get hands on with my macs as you can tell!

Photos is the new iPhoto. iPhoto is dead. You can't use iPhoto on El Capitan but you can import your iPhotos library into Photos.

You should be able to roll back just fine.

Aha, thanks for clarifying!

A read around suggests loads of people have had issues migrating their iPhoto libraries to Photos I think I'll try taking a copy of my 180GB library to the iMac and see how it goes before I risk messing around with the Mini!
