Morning

Ok looking for a laptop and have seen 2, but they have the following names.

Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core T2080 Processor
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7250 Processor

Whats the difference in the 2? Sorry if this has been asked before.

What a massive mistake it was for Intel to start branding the low end chips Pentiums. All it's done is cause confusion.
If they'd just stuck to CoreDuo and Core2Duo then it would have been so much easier.

The T7250 is the better CPU as it has more features and is based on a newer architecture. The T2080 is nothing like the desktop Pentiums of old though, I'd imagine there'd be a small scale fire if you stuck one of those in a laptop...

Not that it makes much difference, but the main difference in terms of positioning is that Pentium Dual Core does not qualify as Centrino

CoreDuo and Core2Duo both do

Pentium Dual Core (Not to be confused with Pentium D) is designed to sit below Centrino, and although i'm not in any way party to the decisions i guess the thinking was, better to use an already established but redundant brand than try and think up a new one. (Intel has dont the same on Desktop)

But i accept it is confusing to follow. In summary, in order of performance

T9xxx (Out Jan)
T8xxx (Out Jan)
T7xxx
T5xxx
T2xxx

"Centrino" just means that all components are official intel components doesnt it?

Centrino is a 'Platform' for laptops, just as ViiV is a platform designed for Digital Home entertainment computers.

The "Platform" is the 'computer as a whole' rather than the individual componants. Centrino for example specifies Wifi specifications in addition to CPU. Its the whole package, really the cpu/northbridge/southbridge and whatever else they want to add in.

I believe ViiV specifies chipset support for HD Video and Audio, Remote Control, Wired LAN, and TV Tuner.
