I am trying to set the correct settings for my memory (Geil Ultra DDRII 800).

I have the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P Mainboard and I'm confused on where and what to change any settings. Could you please help in what I need to do to set my memory. Settings are currently on AUTO and I have heard that you will need to set the timmings manually to get the best stock speeds on Geil memory. I do not wish to overclock, I just want to get the speeds which are advertised, I have heard that the voltage is recommended at 2.1v for this particular memory and have no idea where to set this. I have found some settings which are below but have no idea what they are.

CAS latency time
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay
DRAM RAS# Precharge
Precharge delay (tRAS)
ACT tO ACT Delay (tRRD)
Write to read Delay
Write to Read Precharge Delay
Refresh act Delay
Read to Precharge Delay

I am so confused, if someone out there has the same mainboard and RAM then I would be gratefull for all your help.

Thankyou

It's pretty easy with the DS3P.

Set the first four timings to 4, 4, 4 and 12 respectively. Also set the Memory Overvoltage to +0.3v.

Many thanks, I completed as stated above and my Windows Vista Experience Index went from 5.6 to 5.7

I have seen others with the same setup and they get 5.9
I have also seen others with cheaper RAM and they get 5.9 for Memory also.

Am I doing something wrong?

I have 4GB (4x1GB Geil Ultra 800) RAM running Dual Channel.
All of my other devices have 5.9 except for my WD 300GB SE16 which scores 5.7 but I will soon be receiving the 500GB version of this drive, which I do't think will make much difference but I have seen others with the 500GB version and they get 5.9.

Hope you can help, thanks again.

Is the Vista Experience Index rubbish? If yes, why?

I have heard that games in the future will detail the required Experience Index score, if this is true wouldn't this cause a problem if it is not accurate?

How would you rate my System, would you recommend overclocking and what sort of improvements would I gain by overclocking?

Thanking you once again, your help and advice is appreciated :)

Well it's not rubbish as it gives a rough guide. But it does odd things like giving some 2gb memory a higher rating than 4gb. There's better ways of benchmarking a system.

And your system is damn fine. Quad-core + 4gb + 8800GTS = a whole lotta fun.

As for overclocking, it's up to yourself. Your Q6600 should do 3ghz simply by upping the FSB to 334mhz and dropping the System Memory Multiplier to x2.4. Anything above that will require a little more work, but it's easy if you do your research.

So would it be safe upping the FSB to 334mhz and dropping the System Memory Multiplier to x2.4 ?

Also are there any other settings I should change when doing the above?

Also, what software would you recommend when benchmarking my system and what do you use?

Many thanks

***I am new to overclocking so excuse my knowledge on this subject***

Yeah it's safe. And you shouldn't have to change anything else. Tho it would be a good idea to take the CPU voltage off Auto and set it to 1.300v.

The usual suspects can be used for quick benchmarking (3DMark 06, Super-PI, Cinebench, Si Sandra and Everest). Prime95 v25.5 can be used for stability testing.

I have gone into the bios but cannot find the options you stated.

I have found the System Memory Multiplier, CPU Voltage Control and the CPU Host Frequency are these what need to be changed?

CPU Voltage - 1.3000v
System Memory Multiplier - x2.4 (Can only set to 2.5).
CPU Host Fequency - 334

Ive loaded up CPU-z and it states my memory is set as below;

5 - CAS# Latency
5 - RAS# to CAS# Delay
5 - RAS# Precharge
18 - Cycle Time

Correct me if I'm wrong but I cahanged the settings as you stated for the memory so surely it should state 4-4-4-12 ?

I still cant find the settings to change the FSB ect to run the CPU at 3GHz

CPU Host Frequency is the FSB setting.

Are you sure the 3ghz overclock didn't fail as that would result in the board setting both the CPU Host Frequency and memory timings back to auto.

Yup, it must have failed as I had to set the RAM Timings again or perhaps I done something wrong when changing the settings on my mainboard.

Should I be able to overclock my CPU to 3GHz as I haven't heard of anyone not being able to do this?

Could my setup be preventing me from overclocking?

Thanks

Keep the memory timings on 5-5-5-15, set the System Memory Multiplier to x2.5, set the CPU Voltage Control to 1.35v and up the CPU Host Frequency to 334mhz.

That should be enough. It was probably the 4-4-4-12 timings causing the fail as your memory would be running at 835mhz. And possibly the CPU's voltage running at only 1.3v too, so set it to 1.35v instead.

Everything now seems fine. CPU is running @3.01 :)

Are there any other settings worth changing and can I overclock the memory and GPU easily?

Thanks again
