Confused on my next monitor

I currently have a 8-9yr old monitor that I bought from OCuk in 2006 !
(NEC MultiSyncLCD 20.1" 6ms), running at a 1680x1050.

I've been trying to pull the trigger on a new monitor for the last couple months and been unable too due to analysis-paralysis.

I'm running a MSi GTX 660 2GB in my machine at the moment.

I'd say my use is equally split between gaming (BF4/Dota2), Movies, Web..

I nearly bought this weekend the Asus SonicMaster MX279H 27", but backed out at the last minute with people saying 1920x1080 res at 27" didn't look too great.

So I then considered getting Asus PB278Q 27" for the 1440p resolution but figured my graphics card wouldn't cut the mustard....?

This then lead me to 24" monitors...

Is it worth going for one of these fancy 144hz monitors, i.e. BenQ XL2411T or will I run into the same limitations due to gfx card?

Or should I grab the Asus VN247H...?

Any advice/pointers would be greatly appreciated..

GTX 660 is generally fine for 1440p gaming at medium settings. Running games at 120/144Hz requires a faster card or you won't see real benefits. ASUS PB278Q is a fine monitor and 1440p is so much better for movies/web than 1080p. I'd suggest get a 1440p one.

exactly same situation man. Really dunnno what I should do. IMO would be better to go with higher resolution monitor so you're ready for next GFX upgrade.

is 1080p that bad on 27"?

QUESTION, is playing games at 1080p on a 1440p monitor a good idea?

If you buy a 1440p I don't see the point in then running things at 1080p seems to defeat the point.

As for 27" 1080p some people say its fine some say its awful.

Some say 120hz/144hz @1080p is better than 1440p......I think the bottom line is monitors is a bit of a personal thing and what works for one person doesn't for everyone else.

The 660 is a reasonable card and can probably run most things on medium settings.

I would go for 1440p every day. The extra res and beautiful image is much more of a marked improvement over 1080p and 120Hz is, imo.

I just went from 1080/120hz to 1440p. Can't imagine ever moving back. As long as I'm hitting 60 I don't notice any real difference between that and 120hz.

Which 1440p monitors did you go for? Do you notice any issues with lag/response time in gaming ? as obviously IPS by its nature has higher lag/response times, especially if you were coming from a gaming 120hz monitor.

I'm pretty much in the same boat, I'm gaming on 1050p from 8 year ago.
Would a 1080p upgrade be noticeable?
If not would my 280x run 1440p until I can xfire or should I xfire first.
Would be a few months between upgrades for financial reasons.

Similar situation myself

Solely for gaming a 1080p 144Hz 'Gaming' monitor would be more suitable then a 1440p monitor, right?

As a comparison, here is the out-going monitor, bought from OC in 2006.. NEC MultiSync 20WGX2

Have to say been pretty happy with it. Just want to go to something bigger resolution wise..

And one for comparison..

The monitor is HUGE. like really big.. and the screen resolution, going from 1650x1080 to this is a huge jump...

It does look slightly too big for my desk, I sit pretty close, so maybe a 24" would have been a better resolution.

YouTube/Movies look fantastic now,..
BF4 looks good as well on max resolution, but on medium settings..
Dota2 runs 1920x1080 in window mode, so looks ok.
