Hi everyone,

School I work at are looking to purchase about 25 Ipads within the next 2 months.

I can order either Ipad v2 or the Ipad with retina display on all sizes. Is the Ipad with retina display the latest Ipad version?

Next question, would the Ipad mini be better suited for class rooms or staff or do the majority prefer their full size Ipads?

Thanks.

iPad with retina is the latest and I'd probably go full sized if you wanted to actually do some work on one.

I'd avoid the iPad 2. No real reason to get one when the iPad mini offers exactly the same features in a cheaper, smaller package.

Not that I agree at all with a school getting iPads, but the mini would probably be the better choice as it does the same thing for less money. I can't imagine an education scenario where the mini would truly be underpowered, and for the most part, it'll see support for roughly the same amount of time as its bigger sibling.

There are two iPads with retina displays, the iPad 3rd Generation and 4th Generation. The only one currently in production is the 4th generation.

I guess it would depend on what exactly they intend to do with them, for fully fledged work then the full sized iPad would be better but if it is just as a reference tool then the Mini might be a better choice. It is lighter, cheaper and easier to handle which could result in less accidents.

You'll definitely want to invest in some cases for them for them though.

Apple's naming convention went:
  1. "iPad" - the original 2010 iPad - discontinued
  2. "iPad 2" - the 2011 faster iPad - still sold
  3. "iPad" - the third version in early 2012 which added the Retina display - discontinued
  4. "iPad with Retina display" - late 2012, same as iPad 3 but with faster processor - still sold

The iPad 3 still had a retina display, just has less grunt than the current iPad. There's nothing wrong with the iPad 3 if you're getting a good deal compared with iPad 4, but don't go pay full price for something that was superceded in November.

The release of the fourth-generation iPad led to the discontinuation of its predecessor, the unexpected announcement and release caused discontentment amongst 3rd generation iPad users. In response, Apple extended its 14 day return policy to 30 days, additionally as ITProPortal noted, since the price of both models is identical, consumers that purchased the third generation iPad within this time frame are effectively allowed to exchange their discontinued device for the fourth-generation model.

To be sure what you're getting, ask your supplier for the model numbers. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5452

Wasn't this "The New iPad"?

Yep! But Apple have made things much less confusing by calling the new iPad (not to be confused with the old iPad that was called "The new iPad") "iPad with Retina display", which definitely tells us that it is newer than the older "The new iPad" :p

For a school I'd go with iPad 2s, retina means nothing in that environment but a larger screen will be better for clumsy fingers and multiple kids viewing at once.

And just to say... Griffin survivors.. all day long, screw otterbox :)
