Hi,

I have just bought a Gigabyte MA790XT UD4P AMD motherboard. I have seen that only a few memory modules state AMD Phenom support. Could anyone tell me what I need to be looking out for and what ram's the motherboard can and can't take????

Many thanks

Sam

i was advised to get a set of g.skill ripjaws on this forum.seem to work ok but i had to rma, first time due to i faulty stick.look on the gigabyte website, and that tells u what memory is supported ,if ur o/clocking go 4 1600mhz,cl8 s should do
by the way, my board is a gama 770T ud3 am3

All you need is ram running at 1333Mhz @ 7-7-7-24 timings you wont see ANY performance increase using higher specced ram, especially in gaming.

Right I see now. So any DDR3 should work with the AM3. I was under the impression that only those who montion AMD support could be used.

Many thanks

Most standard memory kits running at 1333Mhz come with timings of 9-9-9-24.

The 7-7-7-24 timings you mention are normally associated with high spec memory, the kind which you rightly say won't give a noticable performance increase.

The OCUK website has product categories called DDR3 Tri-channel and DDR3 Dual-channel. What's the difference and which do I need for my expected purchase of the "AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition". Or does it depend on which MB?
Yours, confused.

You want dual channel kits buddy,Phenoms dont support tri-channel memory.

To further update this thread I've built systems for friends lately with Gskill Ripjaws and it works flawlessly,I chose 1600 for them as the price hike over 1333 is minimal and it will survive a few upgrades.

It is a bit confusing for people here with Ocuk mem kits mostly listed as being for intels so I hope you find the Ripjaws recomendation as some use.
I've also read good things about the OCZ ram on this week only being good for Phenoms over at XS forums.

I just bought these sticks for a Quad Core 965 Black Edition system which are "guaranteed to support all Dual-Channel DDR3 platforms from AMD".

It depends on the motherboard whether or not the G-Skill will run at 1600MHz, I have read that some are incompatible and cannot be bothered with RMAs.
