So I'm putting together new rig and in around 2 months I should have all the parts bought finally. I'm not in a rush to build so I read and research and buy part after part till I finallly have em all. But I'm still confused which windows to buy, xp or vista, home or premium ? Ppl have been complaining about vista for so long yet almost everyone has it. Now there's some new thing about dx10 which I don't even comprehend what the difference is. Last rig I put together was 2 yrs ago and a lot changed since. Can someone help me clear my mind cuz it's buggin the hell outta me.

Go with Vista HP. It will cover all of your needs quite easily.

Also, I think most OEM shipped discs now will be SP1 which has solved a lot of problems.

Don't have Vista yet but Butters is right I would say, no point in buying XP now. Go for Vista and Home Premium should suit unless you absolutely need something in Ultimate, but from knowledge there is nowt really in Ultimate that you'd need. :)

Just recently built a new rig with Vista 64 Home Premium and so far i think its really nice & quick. I was using XP Home 32bit before this but really do prefer Vista so far. It will no doubt take me a little while to find where Microsoft have hidden alll the usual suspects but im in no hurry :)

So is Vista x64 noticeably faster than Vista x86 (x32) then?

Cant really give a direct answer on that because Ive only used Vista 64 on my new rig not 32bit, only used Vista 32bit on my sisters laptop but the spec was completely different so no direct comparison. It did seem fairly repsonsive on her laptop even though it was a lower budget model but I can say it flies on my new rig :)
