On yet another review from E3 AMN have awarded Little Big Planet with game of the show. Other nominees were Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Rock Band, Super Mario Galaxy and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

I've seen multiple demos, read lots of excited forum posts and listened to many podcasts where this game has garnered extreme anticipation and I just can't fathom why.

I'd never say it looks a bad game; for it's genre it looks superb it's just, well, it just looks to me like a highly customisable 2d platform game you can play with your mates.

Maybe I'm the sort that only really gets excited by deep immersive single player rpgs/fps adventures and it's games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 that wet my whistle.

I just feel I must be missing something looking at the sheer number of people getting really excited over this.

Anyone feel the same? Or can anyone who falls in the 'very excited' group help me understand the hype.

I can't say i am hugely about to burst waiting for it, but i will get it the day it comes out.

I think the thing about it is it is diffeent. Everybody goes on about how 'It's just another generic fps, or mario 18 or MGS 5000'
This is truely something completely original, and if it works out could be great.

The other thing that surprises me about LBP is that the hype is self generating. I don't see Sony going on and on and on about it. Sure they give the spiels like any developer/publisher would do, but not going ott which also makes me curious. I think it is going to have to be a game, once you play it you will see what all the fuss is about.

I think this and Echochrome are going to be really good, original games, but tbh i am more looking forward to echochrome now.

I couldn't care less about it, never seen the fuss, I won't bother with it no matter how many good reviews it gets, not my style of game.

Aye, I really liked the look of Echochrome. It's very refreshing to see something genuinely original and well executed. If that was coming the Live! arcade I'd definately get it.

It's the self generated hype, as you say, that has me confused over LBP. There's a lot of people who really do think this is game of the year material.

Echochrome at first i was like wft? then i was like, oooo that could be cool. IIRC it is also a PSP & PS3 title which is cool.

Yeah that's what i don't get, that is why i think it is going to be something you need to play and see working to appreciate tbh.

LBP is part of home is it not (which is free) or is it an add-on to home?

Completely different to home. They only similarity is they where announced at the same press conference.

I wasn't too fussed until I saw the E3 2007 demo..

If you want to be impressed, go watch it ;)

That's the thing. I did watch it, live and then again after the hype started.

To me it seems like the first bit of originality playstation users will experiences, thats why they are hyped.

Other consoles have enough originality and innovation that would make this game be one of the ones to look out for but certainly not a must get.

Looks fantastic fun to me, I think devs are catching onto the fact that we like to build/create stuff and this game is using that to the fullest. Top of my reasons to get a PS3 list tbh.

It looks very similar to a game called "trash it" on the sega saturn.

If fact it's almost identical, with up to a team of 4 racing to the finish but having to cooperate at key points, built in level editor and the general gameplay is identical based on the videos I've seen. It's really nothing original but then no games are nowadays, I just don't like to see the "original" tag falsely thrown around.

Well the similarities must be the race to the end and level editing, which has been around since the day dot.

But LBP is heavily focused on sharing content with as many people as you want. Also it isn't about the building the levels then racing them, LBP doesn't feature a Level editor as such, but it like playing the whole game within a level editor, and iirc you can change things on the fly as the game is progressing.

As far as i can see, this is about as original as a game will ever get after 30 years of video gaming. And if the only game is a rather obscure game from 3 generations ago, then i think it is quite good going.
