HI guys, wondering if you can help me, recenlty my PC began to freeze, what I discovered was that the 2 of the pins that were holidng my CPU fan in place had snapped, causing the CPU not to connect and freeze. So I ordered a new heat sink, whick was fine, but it only came as the fan and it did not have the "bracket" at the bottom which attaches it to the mother board. So now I have a new fan as well as the old, but the problem is I need the bottom plastic piece to connect it to the motehrboard. The thing is I dont know what this is called so I cant find it, does any one know, I hope I havent confused anyone... Thanks

So basically what is this thing called lol...

Thanks

god i thought i was a noob :p its called a heat sink.
and the psu is your power

what motherboard do u have and cpu type+speed

Oh sorry just realised what I had wrote lol... The PSU went before that and I replaced it, thing is I havent got the model of the motherboard with me at the mo, but I have an advent pc and I remeber it had n1996 written on it. I have a INTEL Pentium 4 Socket 478 CPU Heat sink Fan. The fan is fine, but it needs an attachment so it can sit on the motherboard. Like a bracket but I dont know what these are called.

Thanks

download cpu-z and have a look at motherboard page it normally gives u a name and it tells u what cpu u have and you are on about the heatsink and we need to know speed and type to choose correct heatsink/fan

just realised you cant have a look cause pc keeps freezing Question do u get some use or are u on different pc?

I knew my explanation would make this confusing sorry, see the fan I have is fine as well as the new one that I have, they have

Aluminum heat sink
2.5-inch fan
DC 12V, 0.17A
Supports Socket 478 processors up to 3.0 GHz
Approximately 9-inch cable length (from fan to 3-pin connector)
Regulatory

The thing is this fan does not just clip into the motherbaord, it something inbetween it inorder for them to attach together if that makes any sence...

heatsink goes ontop of cpu then fan ontop of heatsink then you hook it down
also is there dried paste on cpu you will have to clean this of and re-apply thermal paste unless there is some provided underneath heatsink but i have not cleaned a cpu before so i dont know what to use to clean

Yeah they have sent the compont to apply after cleaning, see thats the thing I have the Heat sink and CPU, But it needs another plastic part that clips on to the fan which then connects to the motherboard so its

Heats sink=== CPU====Mystery plastic piece ==== Motherboard

Sorry if this is confuding you...

Thanks...

I take it you mean a mounting bracket - I don't think they come under any other name. The black square around the CPU socket? You're saying that it's this that's snapped?

If that is what you mean, they aren't expensive or anything and can be picked up fairly easily. It's against the forum rules to post competitor links and names, but I can give you this.

Hope that helps :)

// EDIT // It won't look like the one in that pic, that's just the first one I found.

the plastic mounting bracket comes with the motherboard, so as I see it you have 3 options:

1> buy a new motherboard.
2> contact your motherboard manufacturer and get them to send you a new bracket.
3> buy a heatsink which doesn't need the bracket but mounts directly to the motherboard via the holes instead.

hope this helps. :)

Oh thats it, thats the thing ha ha, now all I have to do is find one that matches. mine has a peg in each corner, so I have to find one that fits. Thanks guys you are great... P.S if you see one like that could you let me know LOL thanks again guys you are great...

The one I linked to and the ones you found both screw in. The ones you've found screw into a back plate that you put behind the mobo for stabilty.

Backplate | MOBO | Mounting bracket | Heatsink
rather than
MOBO | Mounting bracket | Heatsink

I would have thought that it would have fitted fine - although its only £3ish posted anyway, so it isn't a big loss.
