Ok, now I know there are 50 odd posts very similar to this, but none of them really answer my question.

Thinking of upgrading soon, and I thought I had found a good CPU, but reading some posts, I'm unsure now.

I mainly use my desktop for gaming and some webdesign/paper work etc - try to mainly use my lappy for day to day stuff.

I was thinking of getting a Q6660 and OCing to hopefully 3.2-3.6 ish (400fsb) so I can use PC2-6400 - Not sure about this stuff, but looks half decent.

After reading some other posts lots of people recommend the E8400 and Ocing to 3.6-4.0, so if I went for the 3.6 clock I can still use the same RAM?

Now I know games are starting to get optimised for two cores and not really for four, but last time I checked both these CPU's are pretty much the same price (OEM Q6660 vs Retail E8400) so why would you not choose the quad?

Bearing in mind I'm currently running a single core at the minute and probably won't be upgrading the key component's again till the new architecture is well established (1-2 years after launch), only upgrading GPU and increasing RAM where needed etc.

So would a quad core, be a more viable option as it allows me to have roughly the same clock, slightly more cache, aswell as a couple of cores that may not be used now, but in months to come may start be used more and more?

Like I said, this has been asked quite a lot and I do apologise but nothing really answered my question.

Ohhhh also I know it's not the correct forum to put it, but how do people rate the x48's (mainly Asus Rampage) as a clocker board? Thinking of getting a x-fire of the new Ati cards so I'm guesing it's and x-48 or x38 mobo that's needed ideally?

Cheers

Firstly that memory will be fine for clocking either a Q6600 or an E8400.

If the upgrade is going to have to last 2 years then go for the quad-core. In games you'll not notice the difference between a Q6600 @ 3.6ghz and an E8400 at 4ghz, but in the future the extra two cores of the quad-core will start to come into their own.

As for a board, yeah X38 or X48 is recommended for Crossfire, tho the new P45 chipset's Crossfire performance should be a lot better than P35's. If you do go for X48 then the Asus Rampage is a much-loved board.

P45 if you're going to stick with a single card setup, X48 if you're going Crossfire.

Plus with the positive review that Guru3D have on the 4850 Crossfire, I'd be looking at a X48.

MSI X48C I'm testing at the mo is doing very nicely, and a great price.
